Boosting Export Through Quality Testing -UNIDO Hands Ghana Support

The united Nations’ Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), through State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of Switzerland, has yesterday, February 6, 2018, officially commissioned an ultramodern wood and furniture testing centre, at Fumesua, in the Ashanti Region.The Wood and Furniture Testing Centre (WFTC), which is a part of UNIDO’s Trade Capacity Building (TCB) initiative, is the first of its kind in the whole of West Africa, and will serve as a quality testing centre for wood and furniture.

The facility, which will be managed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of the Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) at Fumesua, near KNUST in Kumasi, will ensure standard and quality of wood and furniture both for local usage and for export.

In a press statement released, on Monday, February 5, Ms Linda Gyala, National Expert, Marketing and Communication at UNIDO, said, “The TCB programme aims at ensuring that goods and services emanating from or traded in Ghana are designed, manufactured and supplied in a sustainable manner that conforms to market requirements as well as those of the regulatory authorities in the local and in the export markets. The project is focused on four main value chains – cocoa, fish, fruits and wood.”

The laboratory facility would serve as wood and furniture testing centre under International Standard Organization (ISO)17025. It will test and certify wood products for exports and for domestic markets.

Aspects of furniture the testing centre will test include; furniture alternating, stability, displacement and pendulum, universal testing, test for moisture and heat of wood/furniture among others. The facility also has some special components such as, climate chamber, scientific oven and incubator, a universal testing machine, and rigs such as alternating bending, stability test, displacement and pendulum test rigs.

Most recent of similar projects under the Trade Capacity Building (TCB) initiative, funded by SECO and managed by UNIDO is The Ghana Export Promotion Authority’s Market Hub, launched on December 14, 2017 in Accra.

Gracing the commissioning event of the (WFTC) were; Prof. Alex Dodoo (CEO for Ghana Standard Authority (FDA) who represented Mr Alan Kyeremanteng, minister for the sector), Juan Pablo Davila (Project Manager – UNIDO), officials from Bern University and Swiss Embassy in Accra, Victor Mills (National Project Coordinator – UNIDO), Prof Victor Agyemang (Dir G – CSIR), Rev Prof. Charles Ansah, Dr Mrs Lucy Amissah, Prof Daniel Ofori, Prof Hans Adu Dapaah, Mr Maxwell Osei Kusi (UNIDO-TCB committee member), officials from GEPA – Madam Theodora Froko, Bruce Bullu Liman, Mrs Naomi Appiah – CSIR among other dignitaries.

The official opening ceremony served as an opportunity for invited guests and the general public to familiarize themselves with intended operations of the centre.
