The Cocoa Derivative Sector

Ghana’s Non-Traditional Exports (NTEs) have been dominated by Cocoa derivatives, accounting for over 30 percent of the total NTE earnings. These derivatives comprise Cocoa paste, cocoa powder, cocoa butter, chocolate and chocolate products and other cocoa byproducts.

One striking feature of the derivative mix has been the exports of large volumes of semi processed cocoa products compared to cocoa confectioneries. The confluence of major factors in the tertiary segment of the value chain brought about by the forward integration by actors in the country and the development of the National Export Development Strategy (NEDS) by GEPA will go a long way to change the disequilibrium.
