First International Coconut Festival Launched

The very 1st International Coconut Festival has been held from 24th – 26th  September 2019 at the Accra International Conference Center. The festival, which seeks to shed light on coconut as a functional fruit is being organized by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority in partnership with the African Coconut Group.

CEO of Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Ms. Afua Asabea Asare, opened the conference by encouraging participants to be on the lookout for a wide range of innovative products made from coconut. Also present at the launch were the Chairman of the African Coconut Group, the Western Regional Minister and dignitaries from Nigeria, Philippines  and Canada.

Over the three-day period, participants and vendors had the opportunity to listen to panel discussions and presentations centered on the coconut value chain. This included insights on health benefits, how to build robust competitive coconut industries, risks associated with the coconut industry and strategies to prevent pest infestations and diseases. Discussions on the need for Global Gap certification to position Ghana as a coconut giant, dominated interactions as well when it came to standards for export and the international market.

An exhibition showcasing the various uses of coconut were a prominent part of the festival. From cosmetics to edibles, coconuts were creatively and tastefully used to create a wide range of items on display. Ambassadors for the festival Kofi Kinaata and Okyeame Kwame also thrilled fans with live performances on the second and third days of the festival.

It is expected that the Coconut Festival will be an annual affair to position Ghana as the African Hub for coconut.
