GEPA 50th Anniversary Outdoored to the Media
The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Robert Ahomka-Lindsay has encouraged Ghana Export Promotion Authority to focus on adding value to exports as a way of increasing revenue and meeting its target.
The Honourable Deputy Minister made the call when he graced the occasion at the media launch of the 50th anniversary of GEPA at the Export Trade House.
According to the Deputy Minister, “We have an African Continental Free Trade Area where over 1.2 million African products are marketed. Let us us build on that opportunity to transform our economy”.
The Chief Executive Officer of GEPA, Madam Afua Asabea Asare on her part, said the organisation was halfway through a review of Ghana’s five-year National Export Strategy, which would enable GEPA achieve a target of USD 5.3 billion by 2021.
Madam Asare further announced that GEPA last year won the coveted World Trade Promotion Organisation (WTPO) Award for best in the use of information technology in the industry and disclosed that GEPA would play host to about 120 institutions from 95 countries during the WTPO 2020 conference in Accra.
A number of former Chief Executive Officers of GEPA who were special guests at the event shared their thoughts and took the audience down memory lane. Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Agyeman, who served the organisation from 2000 to 2012, commended successive management and staff of the authority, including board members, for their respective roles in making GEPA the leading export entity in the country.
“I am challenging you to keep on shining, and please, do not lose focus in your responsibility” he added.
Some of the events lined up for the year under the theme 50 years of facilitating Ghana’s export as enumerated by Madam Asare include:
EXPORTERS’ REGIONAL CARAVAN
A caravan moving from one region to another, featuring exporters in each region and key stakeholders within the Export Ecosystem to showcase new products and enabling exporters’ growth.
STAFF CSR ACTIVITY
A medical outreach programme in a rural community whose main occupation impacts positively on export in the Agri-business sector.
ESSAYS & PROJECT COMPETITION
A project to encourage youth to be export-oriented by rolling out a competition among tertiary students to tease out implementable export concepts
LAUNCH OF DESIGN WEEK
An initiative open to all exporters, to showcase the importance of design and packaging to manufacturing.
REGIONAL EXPORTERS’ FORUM
Panel discussions enriched with the presence of prominent Resource Persons speaking on export related topics of concern in Tamale, Kumasi, Takoradi and Accra.
JUBILEE EDITION OF EXPORT SCHOOL
A golden jubilee edition of GEPA’s flagship training programme – the Export School which will have in attendance eminent speakers for the various sessions.
LAUNCH OF YOUTH IN EXPORT
A project in partnership with the Youth Employment Agency to develop, train and mentor youth in the business of export.
NATIONAL EXPORTERS’ AWARDS & PRESIDENTIAL GALA
The climax of the year-long activities with the Exporters Awards and Presidential Gala to acknowledge and reward deserving personalities and businesses in the export sector as an inspiration to others.
