GEPA to Develop Avocado for Export

Ghana will soon earn greatly, as a result of proceeds, from the export of avocado fruits, from Ghana to other countries, in the next four to five years. Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Madam Gifty Kekeli Klenam has said.

The GEPA boss stated this, in an exclusive interview with Paris based Marcopolis Publishing Corporation. “This year, we want to develop avocado”, she stated.

Madam Klenam added that, with all good interventions and programmes, funding at all levels: from product identification/competitive analysis, all necessary testings of the product value chains, to development of the identified product, remains a challenge, not only in Ghana but across the world.

That notwithstanding, Madam Klenam is highly positive the development of avocado under the spelt mandates of GEPA, for export, will receive needed funding, before end of 2018.

Having thoroughly accessed potential markets for avocados across the globe, the GEPA boss wants Ghana to become an exporter of avocado fruits, with accompanied export returns, as part of her outfits $10bilion export revenue accrued target for Ghana, from nontraditional products, from the current rate of a little over $2.3bilion yearly average returns on these nontraditional products (i.e all Ghanaian products aside electricity, raw gold, raw timber and unprocessed cocoa).

When funding for avocado is secured, the product (avocado), will add to the list of products such as cashew, pineapple and coconut, which are currently being developed in their various value chains, for increased export returns of these named products, under the national export strategy.

Avocado cultivation and export potential

Avocados are commercially valuable and are cultivated in tropical and Mediterranean climates throughout the world. They have a green-skinned, fleshy body that may be pear-shaped, egg-shaped, or spherical.

Commercially, they ripen after harvesting. Avocado trees are partially self-pollinating and are often propagated through grafting to maintain a predictable quality and quantity of the fruit.

According to Netherlands’ Centre for the Promotion of Imports (Dutch: Centrum tot Bevordering van de Import uit ontwikkelingslanden) from developing countries (internationally known by its Dutch acronym CBI) established in 1971, imports of fresh avocados, from cultivating countries, to the European market have doubled from 2012 to 2016.

This upward trend is driven by the consumer demand for ready-to-eat and healthy food. It creates opportunities for producers and exporters, especially for the Hass avocado variety, although competition is increasing.

The best opportunities are on large consumer markets such as France, Germany, Spain and the UK, which are often supplied through the Netherlands.
