Glitz Africa Honours Dr. Afua Asabea Asare at Ghana Women of the Year Awards 2020

  The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Dr. Afua Asabea Asare has been celebrated as the Honouree of Excellence in Public Service at the 5th Ghana Women of the Years Awards 2020.

The prestigious event was held on September 26, 2020 at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, Ghana.

The Ghana Women of the Year Honours is an annual event organized by Glitz Africa in recognition and celebration of women who have attained remarkable heights in their area of practice. The women honoured at the ceremony have risen through the ranks and continue to shine in positions usually dominated by men. They have brought about growth and development in their various capacities and continue to prove that women deserve a seat at the decision-making table.

The 5th edition of the awards ceremony continued to focus largely on women empowerment and women inspiring women. It also condemned rape and gender-biased violence against women considering the surge of such atrocities during the Covid 19 Pandemic.

Celebrated at the ceremony were 12 powerful and awe-inspiring women cutting across sectors such of media, technology, public service, healthcare, education, governance and business among others.

CEO of GEPA, Dr. Afua Asabea Asare was celebrated as the Honouree for Excellence in Public Service for her achievements on the Ghanaian Export scene. As CEO of the government agency mandated to develop and promote Ghana’s Non Traditional Exports, Dr. Asare has created initiatives such as the Youth in Agriculture Project, Youth in Export Competition as well as the renovation of Art & Craft Centres in selected regions.

These initiatives are tailored to help deal with unemployment by training and helping the youth create full time careers for themselves in export. The commissioning of the modern Abompe beads factory in the Eastern region and her impactful support to the shea karite women in the Northern region are but a few examples to mention when looking at Dr. Asare’s contribution to women in export.

While delivering her acceptance speech, Dr Asare thanked God for His blessings and expressed her appreciation to  her family, friends and work colleagues for their support which enabled her accomplish her achievements. She further thanked all women in export and those who add value to our products.

“I want to thank all the women of Ghana, especially those in export, the women that till the soil, those that add value and those that export to make our country what it is today.”

Also honoured on the night where personalities such as Elsie Addo Awadzi, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana;  Ethel Cofie, Founder of Women in Tech Africa, Bozoma Saint John, Chief Marketing Officer at Netflix and Hon. Akosua Frema Osei Opare, Chief of Staff at the Jubilee House.

Special guests for the night of glitz, glamour and good music included Hon. Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Minister of Communications, Dr. Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Former First Lady of Ghana and Hon. Robert Ahomka-Lindsay, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry.

Glitz Africa initiated the Ghana Women of the Year Honours with a mission to celebrate Ghanaian women who use their expertise and influence to inspire others to make a difference in driving other women forward.
