China’s Hainan province opens two more duty free stores
THE WHAT? China’s island province of Hainan has opened two new duty free stores, taking the total number in the province to nine.
THE DETAILS Launched in Haikou, the Global Premium Duty Free Plaza is situated in a shopping mall and offers cosmetics and perfumes, amongst other items, while the second store sells just under 500 international brands.
THE WHY? The launch of the new stores indicates a growing area of development for duty-free shopping in Hainan and is said to boost the region’s lure as an international tourism destination.
Yang Jun, Vice General Manager of Hainan Development Holdings Co, which owns Global Premium Duty Free Plaza, said, “We will join hands with other shop operators to expand Hainan’s offshore duty-free market, attract more Chinese to spend in Hainan rather than in the overseas markets, and promote the consumption upgrading of the Hainan free trade port.”
