No going back: Unilever boss says the era of full-time office workers is over
THE WHAT? Unilever CEO, Alan Jope has dismissed the idea that office workers will return to the daily 9-5. Speaking to The Guardian, Jope said that the pandemic has transformed working life for good and that home-working was now entrenched and set to become permanent for many.
THE DETAILS “We anticipate never going back to five days a week in the office,” Jope told The Guardian. “That seems very old-fashioned now.”
The London-based FMCG manufacturer would likely use a hybrid between home and office for most workers once social distancing measures are lifted, Jope said.
THE WHY? The pandemic has prompted sweeping changes to working life and, now more than a year in, these changes can no longer be called temporary. Unilever has re-examined working practices accordingly, trialling a four-day week in New Zealand and enabling home working and flexible hours elsewhere.
