Tokyo’s Ginza Six mall closes more stores as pandemic keeps shoppers away
THE WHAT? Ginza Six mall located in Tokyo has shuttered more stores due to the ongoing COVID-19 travel bans, with tourists and high-end consumers staying away from the shopping destination, according to a report by Reuters.
THE DETAILS According to the mall, 15 stores, including luxury cosmetic brands such as Shiseido, Shu Uemura and Salon Des Parfums, have closed over the past few days, with foreign tourists making up a large part of Ginza Six’s target audience.
THE WHY? While having escaped the pandemic better off than many countries, Japan is still feeling the hit of the drastic fall in global visitors. Likewise, the country is set to feel the effects of the lack of Chinese consumers during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
Atsumi Gamou, Head of Japan Tourism Agency, told Reuters, “Retailers which were mainly focused on duty-free and other products popular with inbound tourists are struggling hard. It’s extremely difficult, to have an entry ban on tourists at a time when Chinese visitors would ordinarily be coming for Lunar New Year holidays.”
