Walgreens Boots Alliance makes history with Starbucks’ Rosalind Brewer CEO appointment
THE WHAT? Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) has announced the appointment of Starbucks COO Rosalind (Roz) Brewer as its new Chief Executive Officer, replacing Stefano Pessina, making her the first woman and first African American to head a Walmart division.
THE DETAILS Effective 15th March, Brewer will also join the WBA Board of Directors, with Pessina transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman of the Board.
According to a company press release, “Brewer brings to WBA a proven track record of leadership and operational expertise at multi-national corporations, with deep experience in strategic development, marketing, digital transformation and loyalty, innovation and technology, supply chain and store development.”
THE WHY? The appointment of Brewer makes her the first Black woman to run a company on the S&P 500, according to the FT, with her new position mirroring the ongoing global drive to bolster diversity and minority groups within leadership roles.
Brewer is placed at number 27 on Fortune’s 50 Most Powerful Women in Business.
Pessina said of Brewer’s appointment, “She is a distinguished and experienced executive who has led organizations globally through periods of changing consumer behavior by applying innovation that elevates customer experiences – ultimately driving significant and sustainable growth and value creation. Her relentless focus on the customer, talent development, operational rigor and strong expertise in digital and technological transformation are exactly what WBA needs as the company enters its next chapter.
